Using handheld devices while driving on the UK roads is not only very dangerous but also illegal since 25 March 2022.

Offences include taking photos, filming or videos, scrolling through music playlists, using streaming services, or playing games.  It is illegal to hold and use a phone, sat nav, tablet, or any handheld device that can send or receive data, while behind the wheel, driving or riding a motorcycle.

It is illegal to hold and use a phone, sat nav, tablet, or any handheld device that can send or receive data, while behind the wheel, driving or riding a motorcycle. The law still applies if a driver is stopped at traffic lights, queuing in traffic, supervising a learner driver, or using a car that has a start/stop engine when not moving.

Handheld devices must never be used by a driver when behind the wheel, even if it is offline or in flight mode, unless parked away from the road with the ignition off.

Breaking the law can attract up to 6 penalty points and a £200 fine.

New drivers who passed their driving licence test within the last 2 years of the offence could also lose their licence.

Offending driver can get a further 3 penalty points if a full view of the road is not possible and traffic ahead or proper control of the vehicle due to use the handheld device. Offenders can also be taken to court where a ban from driving may be imposed with a maximum fine of £1,000 or up to £2,500 for lorry or bus drivers.
